EMF BASICS
EMF - Electro Magnetic Field is an invisible charge of force that is associated with the use of electricity and is capable to affect living cells. Voltage in any wire creates an EMF around it. Science is yet to determine the mechanism of these effects and all properties of the EMFs. EMF is intangible - you cannot feel it, touch it, smell it or see it. EMF is present wherever electricity is used - all electrical appliances emit some EMF. The highest levels of EMF have been linked to looped wires, another words if you make a loop from an electrical wire, the EMF emission can increase from a safe level to 200 times the safe limit. Some walls, have hidden loops of electrical wire, some appliances have electrical wire looped by the virtue of it's design. |

Any device that uses electricity emits some EMF - the questions is whether the amount of EMF it emits is within recommended limits. Some of the 'worst offenders' are listed below:
- Power lines;
- Electrical utility rooms;
- Transformers;
- Improper wiring;
- Wire loops hidden in the wall;
- Computers;
- Refrigerators;
- TV sets;
- Dishwashers;
- Microwave ovens;
- Electric blankets;
- Electric clocks.

Prolonged exposure to EMF with higher than recommended intensity has been linked to:
- Chronic fatigue;
- Loss of appetite;
- Headaches;
- Heart problems;
- Immune system suppression;
- Hormone imbalances;
- Nausea;
- Decreased sex drive;
- Leukemia;
- Brain tumors;
- Birth defects;
- Miscarriages;
- Prostate and breast cancer.

Can I protect myself from EMF? Electricity and EMFs are an inseparable part of modern day living. Nobody would be able to completely protect one's self from EMFs without avoiding all electrical devices. Most experts, however, agree that limited, non-chronic exposure to EMF is not a threat. So it is acceptable for an individual to drive under the power line or stand around the microwave oven. BUT, everybody should avoid sleeping or having their workplace in the exposure of the EMF emitting device.
What can I do to decrease the exposure to EMF? First of all, you need to find out what areas of your home have the most exposure to EMF. Once the EMF-contaminated spots are identified, you need to make sure that your bed, your desk or your dining table are not located at these dangerous areas. If they are, you have 3 options:
- Move the bed, desk or the dining table to another location ;
- Identify the source of the EMF and get rid of it (move the electrical appliance or re-wire the electrical line emitting EMF) ;
- Shield that location from the EMF.
